Considering SOPHIE's influence on electronic and pop music in the 2010s, it's hard to believe that Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides is only her debut album. The singles she collected on Product emphasized her music's whimsical artificiality, using it as candy-coated armor that expressed her queerness and originality in equally affected and affecting ways. On her first proper album, she allows cracks in that facade that juxtapose her shiny surfaces and what lies beneath them. Once again, Bleep filled their "albums of the year" section with utter garbage. This is a funny time of the year for me, trying to catch up with the hype I missed. So, here's an example of the terrible music that was available last year, a kind of Purity Ring meets Rustie feat. Autechre, but in the worst way. Each and every track is worst than the one before. "Pretending" is the only one I could accept to listen to againStraight to the trash bin.

this album was on big part "best of" lists of major music magazines , shops and crews including boomkat, allmusic.com, groove.de, fact magazine, mixmag, pitchfork u name it

Totally agree: this is borderline unlistenable, and I honestly wonder if some money changes hands to make those "Best of.." lists.

I guess Arca - Entrañas was a great inspiration for her.

Interesting album. Takes in elements of Amnesia Scanner, Autechre, Aphex, Hud Mo/Rustie, ambient interludes and touches of drone/shoegaze. As well as influences from Bjork, Burial and obviously pure Pop/Trap/R+B/Grime/Hip Hop/Trance/House/Dance/Abstract noise/Musique Concrete (phew!) influences and stuff like the obvious comparisons to Death Grips. Add in some post modernist consumerist art. It's interesting in a cool way and nothing that's not really been done before, but I enjoyed the sound design aspect of it. I also like that it challenges the listener with the pretty/aggressive duality. I came to this very late and investigated the earlier Numbers stuff as well. Which led to AG Cook and Co. Fascinating ideas tying pure Pop to left field avand garde electronica.. Like putting two months worth of I.D's music review selections in a blender. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but It's all good and part of life's rich tapestry. So I'm down, and listening....
