Fodderstompf In 1976 Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols set the agenda for punks year zero with Anarchy In The UK, a song that summed up the spirit, sound and attitude of the band in one shocking package. Two years later, the Sex Pistols were in tatters, but Rotten was as unsentimental as youd hope. He reverted to his real name John Lydon and set about forming a band whose very identity kicked against press and media manipulation. Musically speaking, Public Image presented a logical bridge between Lydons old and new ventures, retaining the punk-rock drive and agitated vocals, but with a greater sonic expanse highlighting Jah Wobbles subterranean basslines and Keith Levenes metallic in the materiality sense guitar grind, and hinting at the dub reggae and Krautrock influences that would inform the early PiL's sound. Not all of First Issue casts such an imposing shadow- after completing the albums first side at Townhouse and Manor Studios, the band had blown its budget, and finished off the albums closing trifecta in a more affordable, lo-fi studio that specialized in reggae tracks.
