The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble originally made up of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves and bassist Lewis Worrell. Worrell was later replaced by various other bassists, including Don Moore, Reggie Workman and Finn Von Eyben. Clifford Allen, All About Jazz. The rep of this LP as a touchstone in any respectable library of free jazz remains ironclad. Now, as at the time of its pressing, the music looks beyond such celebratory canonization and stands on its own terms. Derek Taylor, Bagatellen. The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble made up of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves succeeded by Louis Moholo and several different bass players including Lewis Worrell, Reggie Workman and Finn Von Eyben. They formed in 1964 after Tchicai departed from The New York Contemporary Five, and the New York Art Quartet lasted until Rudd joined Archie Shepp's Quartet. They were one of the first groups to record for the ESP Disk record label, and recorded three albums from 1964 to 1965: one apiece for ESP Disk, Fontana and America. Th read more.
