I've owned this since release and if I weren't a collector of music, I would say save your money. I'm not sure what these other guys are talking about! I love Steve Hoffman, don't get me wrong. But this as well as Metallica's RTL on DCC Gold are NOT good. They are compressed to hell and back. The original US CDs sound better. Thrash is supposed to have a cutting, aggressive guitar sound. That life has been sucked out on these gold CDs. The bass is mushy (too warm) and not punchy, the lower mids are good but the upper mids are non-existent (the frequency range where cutting thrash guitars reside) and the highs are rolled off stupidly. Steve probably tried to tame some of the brightness of this album and IMO, he over-did it. I'm a drummer and to hear ride cymbal 'ping' that sound like Lars was using cotton balls on the ends of his sticks really sucks. For comparison, I have the original US CD, some late 80s repressed CD, remastered CD from 1995 (stay away from this!), Japanese CD - 25DP, Original UK MFN LP, UK MFN 45RPM LPs (yes!). The best this album has ever sounded, is on the double 45s from Music For Nations vinyl. Without a doubt! I have pretty high end gear that I listen on.

Best sounding version of Master Of Puppets I’ve hear by far. I own the original release on vinyl, original CD, the latest Blackened remaster. This sounds full, warm and dynamic. You can hear the difference even on boom box, you don’t need a $10k setup. The Prices are getting a little stupid, but for a Metallica fan, it’s very worth it.
Balladolbine Balladolbine
This is the best sounding version of this album that i have ever heard! I highly recommend getting this version, if you can find it. It is supperior to the regular elektra releases. Some people may not notice the difference right away. It's more noticable with a higher end or really good stereo. Everything is mixed just right on this copy, not that the original sounded bad or anything. This one has a slightly 'warmer' touch to it, and was remastered from the original master tapes. Most other cd presses are from EQ'd copies of the master tapes, so they might sound slightly different than other pressings of the same cd or album. This one sounds just right.
Molace Molace
Agreed. The original Elekra wins on my high-end system (Krell preamp, amp and Legacy Audio Focus speakers). Steve's remaster is compressed and loses the Thrash 'edge' (cut, grit) that we 80s Thrash Metal fans crave. Not blaming Hoffman on this. He can only polish the turd of a master tape he was given. The absolute best version of this album that I have is the MFN 45 RPM double LP though. It's laughably good. Cut hot, aggressive, smooth and wide open.
Marelyne Marelyne
master of puppets DCC Gold vs first press with the correct matrix, truly non-remaster:The non-remaster wins it again by a good margin. The DCC Gold is brutal, it might even feel more brutal first, but, the guitar goes too low and it creates a hollowed overall sound, thus making this brutality missing a tight middle.

Just recently got into M through a used copy of Kill Em All which I thought pretty fantastic, decided to buy this and was somewhat underwhelmed. Sounds like Kill Em All but without the edge. Maybe I'm missing something. Not saying its a bad record but just didn't set me on fire
Jeyn Jeyn
Excellent remaster & comes with a dl card to grab a digital version too. Also the msg Obey your remaster is carved into the deadwax! ;) m/
Cerar Cerar
My copy sounds fine. No skips, no pops. Didn't clean before playing because I wanted to hear how it sounds, but I do intend to clean.
lucky kitten lucky kitten
Sounds really good, but good god this thing is mastered too low. I have to turn my system at least twice up from what it usually is set.
Frdi Frdi
It's a good pressing, better than the 2014 version, I only had one very loud pop while during the slow part of Orion and it sounded a little quiet so it's not perfect, but it's good.
Enalonasa Enalonasa
Over all pretty great, but my copy had that thing were once a revolution in a certain spot of the record there was a pop at the end of A3 and beginning of A4, which bugs me a heck of alot.
LiTTLe_NiGGa_in_THE_СribE LiTTLe_NiGGa_in_THE_СribE
Got this for Christmas. I will say this Blackened Recordings remaster and repress is much better than the ones for Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning. No pops or jumps, sound is pretty clean, albeit the volume of the press is a little low (so just turn your volume up). I did clean the record prior to playing and am using a Shure M44G cart on a mid 80s Kenwood direct drive turntable. I'm sure the OP of this album is probably better quality wise, but overall I am happy with this repress especially compared to Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning (neither of those are very good IMO)
Ndlaitha Ndlaitha
It's okay, quiet for sure. I think I'll stick to my original pressing I got a few weeks back
Voodoosida Voodoosida
Sounds great and I had zero skipping or popping. For what it's worth, I first cleaned it before playing.
Kabei Kabei
I am buying a copy of the European pressing to compare sound quality, the stampers were cut by different gents.
Wymefw Wymefw
Please let us know how that works out. My US pressing is very noisy.
Agalas Agalas
Pre-ordered from the Metallica web store. My copy is a dud. Multiple skips on each track. I sent a few videos of the skips to them and they’re sending a replacement copy. Hopefully it plays. I also bought the photo book with the vinyl, which is really cool and a lot of fun to read through. I highly recommend picking it up.
Niwield Niwield
did you wet clean and vac it before playing? That may help.
Kelenn Kelenn
Using the AT95E cart it comes with? Not sure if that is the stock cart
Arashilkis Arashilkis
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. They sent me another copy. It played great up until Orion.
Yanthyr Yanthyr
Are you playing it on a Crosley player or something more suitable for a loud album like this one? It plays great on my Empire Troubador 598 with Empire 99PE/X cart at 1.25 gram.
Ubrise Ubrise
entire album is classic, never gets old, but, this remaster is leaving me a bit cool, just doesn't soundstage well, but pressing is extremely quiet...my quest for a better copy will continue
Nargas Nargas
Missed opportunity to call this edition: "Remaster Of Puppets", in my opinion
Clonanau Clonanau
"Obey Your Remaster" on the hype sticker is good enough for me!
Mildorah Mildorah
Listening to this right now, quite shocked at how many people are saying that this remaster is 'quiet'. I think it's actually kinda loud (in a good sense), far superior to the 'Ride the Lightning' "remaster" that I got along with it (really sucks!!). Love this album, and the remaster is very good. No problems (clicks, noise) on my vinyl. Hope you guys clean your records before you play them (even brand new ones). You'd be surprised how much leftover material is on these things when they come out of the factory.
Nea Nea
Did a thorough wet clean and there's surface noise during most quiet parts, exacerbated by how quiet this album is. The 2016 Ride reissue is significantly better.
JUST DO IT JUST DO IT
I second the recommendation about wet cleaning and vaccuming all records, new and old. I never play anything until it's cleaned.

He speaks the truth, you should wet clean all your albums, new or old used ones.

Man, this one sounds so good. Yes, a little low but just CRANK your stereo as you should. Sounds so clear and punchy. WAAAAAAY better than that 2014 reissue that stole my money.

The edition is a crap, basically because the pressing was made in Germany by Pallas . It´s a cheap pressing and the final result is a consequence. Bellman is great and Grundman and Sterling are a guarantee. But the expensive thing is the pressing and here Metallica chose the cheap way, sadly for all. The best vinyl pressing plants in the world are in USA like Record technology Incorporated that Rubin used in DEATH MAGNETIC. WHAT A VINYL PRODUCTION!!!!
Mr.jeka Mr.jeka
What are you talking about? My eu pressing is just fine, dead quiet and sounding great. DM only sounds better with wooden ears.
Whitescar Whitescar
Pallas is good. Not sure what this guy is going by for his opinion. Not sure how you could compare the pressing for DM as it was a shitty pressing. They took the digital mix and without mixing it for vinyl just simply lowered the volume to meet spec. So, using DM as an example is a poor one at best.
Vojar Vojar
Original Record Pressings is probably the best as far as I'm concerned, but I thought Pallas was suppose to be good?

Did a shootout yesterday at a friends house. He has the 2008 45 RPM, the 1/2 Speed Mastered by MOFI and this CB cut. I brought my VG+ Elektra Allied pressed original. As far as sound goes it went in this order to our ears: 1. Original press 2. 1/2 Speed Mastered 3. 45 RPM and 4. This new CB cut. To be honest I was expecting a lot more out of the CB cut. Clearly Metallica is taking the reissues seriously since they are being mastered at great locations on all releases so it is surprising to me that so far they have not surpassed or equalled the original press on this album IMHO. On the Black Album, CB's work is amazing!

Could you describe what you heard to determine the ranking?

Hoo boy! when Cliff jumps into the chugging riff at the start of Disposable Heroes I was completely sold on this fine remaster. That and the title track alone (mastered like you've never heard it before) more than make up for the near intolerable amount of surface noise you hear between tracks and in quieter parts. As others have said, it's a pretty quiet pressing, so you really gotta crank it to get the most out of the remaster. Unfortunately when you crank the good stuff you also crank the annoying stuff.

I was surprised about this remaster and not in a good way. Unlike others here, I didn't have any skips or pops throughout. It was a very clean pressing. My guess is these people received bum discs. I was surprised that the album was low in volume and lacked punchiness in the low end. If I boosted the volume, it sounded great, but I shouldn't have to boost this to feel the bass and power in the band. I was also expecting to really hear and feel Cliff's bass a bit louder in this mix. I'm happy to own a vinyl copy but wish volume and dynamics were more present.
Iseared Iseared
My copy is full of skips on both sides. I should have expected it but kill and lighting were done so well. Master needs another side for a proper vinyl version. Too much music cramed on each side. Not sure i care much for how it was remastered. I will take this one back and try one more copy.
Ghile Ghile
No skips or issues of any kind on mine...you probably just got a bad copy.

Here are my thoughts on one full listen of the remaster LP.My copy had minimal or almost zero noise. The volume is a little on the low side but nothing the volume knob can't remedy. It sounds very natural and smooth and warm.Definitely a 180 from the last presses. It sounded right and I am very satisfied. While listening to it I was able to enjoy the music and not get distracted by what it "supposed" to sound like.I give it a 9.

Only listened to side A so far,but it is quiet and with minimal pops.TURN IT UP! -No prob -my old Denon speakers love it!I wondered how well they would do with the remaster this time around, and it is as good as I expected it would be for something recorded in 1985.Mine does not seem as full of low end bass as I have heard some say here, but at the same day,I bought an original, brand new (sealed) Tom Waits Mule Variations and took that for a spin first. It is one of the best sounding records I own. I wonder about the coiencidence of my record store getting this in at the shop recently, right when the new Tom Waits remasters have just been announced for 2017-18...Someone had a hoard & decided to sell em now?Hmmm. Oh well,I've wanted it for years anyway and the remaster might even sound worse-who knows right now?So anyway, to then put on this new 2017 remaster of Master right after checking the awesome sound of this 1999 pressing of Mule (which is not advertised as 180 gram on packaging, but most definitly feels and looks like it), it was a bit of a let down, comparably, back to back w/MOP played second. The slip of paper on the inside offering to sell the MOP book that comes with the deluxe boxset was funny. And I'll probably order it for $8. But the corporate grease machine that Metallica is,made me laugh.Oh! Thanks for buying this vinyl' You didn't spend an ungodly amount on the boxset full of pins and stickers and whatnot,so here: Buy this book! And they know I will.I always obey my master.Mp3 download card inside-has the row of Cross-graves on front side. Looks pretty nice.I always though this artwork was their best as well as the music inside. Saw em on ...And Justice For All tour, front row! & I love that album also. It's probably my 2nd favorite in the Holy Metallica trinity, including Ride The Lightning. Sure wish they could do a ReMIX of those! That would be the best. Probably 0 chance of that ever happening.
X-MEN X-MEN
My a side has clicks and pops throughout, any one else?

Did you wet clean and vaccume it before you listened? No record touches my turntable, new or old, before that process. Just a thought.
Stonewing Stonewing
Pops about 2/3s of the way through. Noticing the same on side B, albeit to a lesser extent.
Dellevar Dellevar
Same, a little bit in the Battery intro and a little during the middle of Master but otherwise quiet.
Not-the-Same Not-the-Same
I noticed them mostly in the Battery intro and the interlude of Master of Puppets, but they seemed to go away by Sanitarium, how does your track 4 sound?
Kanrad Kanrad
This vinyl remaster is a bit quiet, and INCREDIBLY BASS HEAVY. Not the bass guitar, but like they just boosted the 100-200hz curve or something. Not bad and could just be that I'm not used to it, but it has a shockingly large amount of low end. Anyone else think so? Good quality otherwise
Tinavio Tinavio
Agreed, I hear the same - the heavier low end is muddled and it does give the sense of more bass, but it's not the bass. I like it. I suspect this remaster is an effort to make up for the original as found on the original Elektra 1986 CD where the bass is but nonexistent.
terostr terostr
I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but my copy seems to suffer from the same thing as my pressing of ...And Justice For All, it's very quiet, so I have to turn it up to the point where the surface noise is kind of distracting. That's not to say that it's a bad remaster, quite the opposite, but I wish these records had less noise!EDIT: it seems the noise is the worst right at the beginning of Battery, and during the quieter parts of Master of Puppets, but otherwise it's not as noiceable as I made it sound. Somehow the intro to Sanitarium is clean. Also, the remaster is fantastic!

Somehow the intro to Sanitarium is clean. Also, the remaster is fantastic! Steve, this was my experience as well. No skips or real pops, but some surface noise during the parts you mentioned. I was expecting the worst for Sanitarium, but like your copy, mine is basically totally clean! Can't complain about this remaster considering the sub-$20 price tag.
Elizabeth Elizabeth
I bought it in the US and it sounds fine, I think I like the original Elektra better but this pressing is quiet. I own a NM Elektra SP pressing which is DMM.
Bele Bele
Yes i did a wet clean and still popping like a mad man.

Did you wet clean the record prior to listening to it?

I dont have it yet either but i Think Howie Weinberg just remastered the cd.I heard somewhere that Chris Bellman mastered the vinyl but i am not sure.Someone have to check the deadwax!

CB etched in the deadwax. . . . . .

I can read 'CB' (Chris Bellman) on the runout matrix
Rit Rit
The runout matrix just says BLCKND-005R-A/B, is there something else in there that would indicate Chris Bellman?
Vital Beast Vital Beast
I don't have it yet but, according to the Metallica website, it was remastered by Howie Weinberg at Weinberg mastering.
Dagdalas Dagdalas
Please someone please update the runout matrix pronto! Does anyone know who remastered it?
Androwyn Androwyn
I knew about the other two but wasn't sure about this one. That is great news! Thanks

Chris Bellman Remastered it and I think he also remastered the previous two albums
