Heart Food is the second album released by American singersongwriter and musician Judee Sill. It was released on David Geffen's Asylum label in March 1973 to acclaim but minimal sales. Sill wrote, arranged, and produced the album. As with Judee Sill, it was reissued by Rhino Records in 2003, featuring new liner notes and extra demos and unreleased tracks. Heart Food. Judee Sill - When The Bridegroom Comes. 1971's Judee Sill begins unobtrusively with Sill's buoyant, finger-picked guitar and her declaration that nothing's happened, but I think it will soon So I sit here waiting for God and a train to the Astral plane. She was very fond of mystic imagery not to mention astrology, but the simple beauty of her music tended to keep the songs from floating off into the ether. And then I heard The Kiss from 1973's Heart Food. If ever there was a song that lived up to the glorious, simultaneous heartbreaking and mending I might expect from a symphony to God, it's this. The second album Judee Sill made proved to be her last. This brief though enjoyable outing took its toll on Sill - a notoriously slow songwriter - during its making, turning her back to her recently kicked heroin addiction and away from the desire to create more music. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings as she did on her previous album, Sill did all of the work herself. To wit, Heart Food suffers only in comparison to its predecessor otherwise, it's a stellar example of the kind of singersongwriter fare the music industry was mining in the early '70s. Where Judee Sill's self-titled debut presented her as a Laurel Canyon hippie with a spiritual fixation, 1973's Heart Food is a more elaborate affair. The final album released during the troubled singersongwriter's brief lifetime is layered with complex vocal and orchestral arrangements underpinning her idiosyncratic, mystical lyrics. Songs range from the gentle acoustic lope of The Pearl to the climactic eight-minute epic The Donor, which fuses The Beach Boys' Smile with a Latin chorale reminiscent of Bach.
