Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini December 22, 1858 November 29, 1924 is regarded as one of the great operatic composers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Although he wrote only twelve operas, Puccini's works dominate the operatic stage, particularly in the United States, where, according to Opera America, Madama Butterfly and La Bohème are the two most frequently performed operas respectively, with Tosca being eighth and Turandot being twelfth on the same list. La bohème ˌlɑː boʊˈɛm Italian: is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini between 1893 and 1895 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème 1851 by Henri Murger. The story is set in Paris around 1830, and shows the Bohemian lifestyle known in French as la bohème of a poor seamstress and her artist friends. There is no lack of stellar, gripping versions of La bohème on disc, and by most reckonings, this one stands toward the front of the pack. Having a cast of superstars is no guarantee that an opera recording is going to have the chemistry to knock you off your feet, but the performers here live up to the expectations that their fame raises. Unsurprisingly, La Bohème doesnt end well. Marcello gets together with his old flame Musetta, only then to discover that Mimi is dying. She passes away in Rodolfos arms and he is left utterly inconsolable. Romantic opera is never very cheerful but in the hands of Puccini, its always exquisitely beautiful.
