Street organ De Arabier The Arab playing in the Belgian town of Veurne during an organ festival on 21 June 2008. 14: of the performer Draaiorgel De Arabier: 'De Arabier' is a barrel organ carousel lending it's Dutch name from the Arab painted on one of the side-boards. It was built in northern Italy around 1875, then rebuilt in 1926 by Pierre Verbeeck Antwerp, Belgium. In 1935 Gijs Perlee 1901-1991, Amsterdam, Netherlands bought 'De Arabier' to rebuild it in 1948 and make it famous by internationally publishing recordings and staging television appearances. Furthermore 'De Arabier' won many prizes in carousel contests The Hague, Haarlem, Groningen, Amsterdam. The Draaiorgel De Arabier so named after the paintings on its highly decorative front was built in 1926 by the well known organ builder Pierre Verbeeck of Antwerp Belgium. After changing hands several times,in 1935 it came into the possession of the well known Amsterdam organ maker Gijs Perlee senior1900-1990 In 1948 Perlee completely overhauled the organ. In 1961,the organ went across the Atlantic to New York,where,for ten evenings,it entertained diners in the restaurant of the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
