Upcoming concerts. If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Any recommendations for a CD version with good sound quality? I recently bought one by Clocktower Records but had to send it back as it was a muddy sounding, poor quality audio rip from a vinyl LP. Appreciate any input! Chris

Already ordered mate, thanks for taking the time to impart your wisdom!

No worries dude. Shanachie version has bonus tracks also. Jah bless

Thanks for the recommendation, will give that version a try!

I recently bought the clocktower / Abraham cd version. Ripped straight from vinyl, crackles and pops throughout, not happy. I recommend the shanachie version, Better sound quality.

I still have my original copy of this LP, bought in 1977 it still has the price "£4.50" written on the front in biro. The matrix is DSR 4710 A and DSR 4711 B. I definitely remember the shop I bought it from, I only visited that shop (very frequently...) in 1977 and the girl in the shop always wrote the price on the front cover so it's very definitely a 1976 or early 1977 press. I believe the original press is the 1st Clocktower (USA) one which Pablo then photocopied to print the JA Yard press.

nat- if you have got the original Yard copy does it start with the "lion!" Before 'keep on dubbing' as there is some confusion ,it's not on the VP repress cd with extra tracks ,but is on my vinyl Clocktower rerelease but I was informed not 'on the original'

Who would've thought to buy this 77 I guess probably me :)

To me this one has the wrong lemma as it is a dub record. KING TUBBS the dubmaster is the main artist, giving Pablo's original productions the dub treatment. The original U. S. Clocktower sleeve credits it this way.

Confusing tracklisting but excellent Dubs all the same. A must for any Dub lover!

This is a lovely album but details are confusing. I've just bought the 3 vinyl disc box. The last track on Disc 3 "Satta" sounds horribly warped - is it supposed to? I've also owned and got rid of a very crackly repressing on brown vinyl. Hate listening to dub on CD but getting decent vinyl version is hard.
Brariel Brariel
That warbly sound your referring to on "Satta" is the Lee "Scratch" Perry's trademark Black Ark studio mixing with his trusty Mutron Phaser effects causing that out of phase "wow and flutter" sound.

I'm lucky enough to own an original of this fantastic album. This was the first dub album I purchased. When I saw it at the record shop, I was attracted by the cover and found the disc was really thick and tough. Couldn't go wrong for $8.00.
Foxanayn Foxanayn
Original copies have the word "Lion" spoken before kicking into 'Keep on dubbing'. This was absent from the later Yard repress that can be confused for the original.

Do you know if this is the 2nd pressing of the Yard label release? I have the same one and was wondering about it. Thanks for your help. Respect.
Nalaylewe Nalaylewe
My Yard Music copy is not original, neither of the two Yard Music presses here. But it definitely has "Lion" word in the beginning, too. Matrix # DSR 8225/6 DT would place this being printed early in 1979. I bought it in late '79 or early '80. I think I will have to add it in the database sometime.
???????????????????????? ????????????????????????
This question of the original is tough to track down. See here: http://www.discogs.com/help/forums/topic/251444

My copy has the word Lion before the first track. It's Yard records, however it's matrix is DSR 8225.

My copy appears identical to this version with regard to the B side label design and B side deadwax matrix info. The A side label however is missing the 'Distributed at 15 Tangerine Place Kgn 5' and has in the deadwax :-MML 3045A - Spiderman - King Tubbys Meet Rockers Uptown, Pablo Records 15-3-93 (similar to another version listed on this site). Anyone know whether this is a JA or UK pressing, and does the 15-9-93 represent a reliable date?
Nalme Nalme
It appears that Delroy Thompson (aka "Spiderman") was mastering engineer at Dynamic Studios between 1989-1995 after which he moved to Tuff Gong. So the 15-3-93 date stamp and DSR seems to link this pressing to Dynamic. However it has been suggested that MML references Marley Media Ltd and links it to Tuff Gong, so that clears that up.......sort of!?
Kahavor Kahavor
Spiderman being on the matrix meant it was it was probably cut/pressed at Tuff Gong studios being one of the biggest Studio/Pressing plant in Jamaica. I could be wrong though.
Modred Modred
Thanks for the input on this but what's the connection with Tuff Gong?
Windforge Windforge
Spiderman is an engineer, lacquer cutter prominent in the '90's till now. It is def a Jamaican press. The numbers sound like a reliable date. Check https://www.discogs.com/label/276300-Tuff-Gong-Recording-Studio

The Eternal First Press QuestionI remember Steve Barrow mentioning on a blog that the first JA Press of 'KTMRU' came out in 1977 and he mentions this very matrix as the first pressing. Plus, the way the Matrices go up from Yards DSR 2402, DSR 4710, DSR 8225 sort of makes sense. Having eventually added the original Labels of this press it also fits with the below comment by  hflax. But JA pressings being notorious I suppose we will never know... But this Vinyl is thick and the sound juicy on this pressing. "Lion"
Scream_I LOVE YOU Scream_I LOVE YOU
My version has the same matrix number, but the cover has a white border (as does the lettering). The label is same, but the print seems to be very slightly off. The sound is fantastic, and record appears very old and shows wear. Is it possible that this is an early bootleg? Perhaps an early repress? This version does not appear on Discogs, as far as I can tell. What leads me to believe it is legit is the matrix is identical.
Dodo Dodo
It probably appears on discogs now. Please compare, is your label with white elements as well or not? Thank you!I still have 4 different issues of this release and I have compared to at least another 3 issues from friends.I was a big fan of this LP ever since and so I have been listening to quite a few different issues over the years. This is what I have compared for sure:YardMatrix / Runout (A:): D • R 2402 - A - D•T• A. He said, he bought it probably in the late 70s, probably used, he started collecting reggae ca. 1979]MessageMessage ‎- PBL-1007 [1984 US or Canadian issue with different sleeve and nice sound, bargain]YardMatrix / Runout (A:): DSR ASIDE - 3510 - KING TUBBYS MEET ROCKERS UPTOWN - GEOVANNI MEET ROCKERS UPTOWN - GEOVANNIMatrix / Runout (B:): DSR BSIDE - 3510 - KING TUBBYS MEET ROCKERS UPTOWN - GEOVANNI[I must have bought this ca 1997, no "Lion", more pressing bubbles]So far, I like the Yard 2402/03 version best , sound quality wise.I have not heard the white label that is supposed to be from the 70s (UK?), but I find it interesting. I have not heard or compared to the original Clocktower / green label US issue.
godlike godlike
The information regarding the original Jamaican release (supposedly 1976) on the Yard label is in error. The cover image shown is the 1977 US Clocktower cover with original photo colors removed and artist name added on top of the original album design. The Clocktower logo is still seen to the lower left, so the Jamaican Yard pressings obviously are later. (I bought my copy circa 1979 carrying the VP Records US import silver sticker.) However, back in late 1976 or early 1977 I held in my hand and enjoyed a white label/white sleeve MONO MIX bought by a friend (an European import). This preceded the US Clocktower issue and is presumably the very first JA issue (if not a strangely early bootleg pressing), not documented on Discogs.
Gardall Gardall
Suppose you're fully right. AFAIK the Clocktower sleeve was earlier (yes, this is obvious from the JA sleeve design which looks like a poorly copied one when it comes to colours). Not safe the Clocktower one was the first press of this album. The matrices of the MONO MIX white/label would be interesting.
